The maiden voyage of Aurora Expeditions‘ newest vessel Douglas Mawson MV will be a full circumnavigation of Tasmania, with environmental scientist, explorer and author Tim Jarvis AM confirmed as the special guest.

Jarvis, celebrated for retracing the legendary journeys of Sir Douglas Mawson and Sir Ernest Shackleton, will provide expert talks, film screenings and on-deck interpretation throughout the voyage.

“Douglas Mawson’s legacy is one of courage, scientific curiosity and environmental stewardship,” said Jarvis. “To help launch a ship that bears his name, while exploring Tasmania’s remarkable wilderness and marine environments, is a privilege. I look forward to sharing field insights and practical ways we can all contribute to protecting the places we visit.”

The Tasmanian expedition will explore the island’s rugged coastlines, remote islands and marine reserves, offering coastal hikes, Zodiac cruises and wildlife encounters. Enrichment programming will be led by Aurora Expeditions’ expert team and Jarvis himself.

“Tim’s connection to Mawson’s legacy, combined with his decades‑long conservation work – from 25zero to the Forktree Project – make him an ideal partner for this milestone voyage,” said Michael Heath, CEO of Aurora Expeditions. “Tim brings unparalleled expertise, passion and perspective to our expedition team.”

Carrying a maximum of 130 passengers, Douglas Mawson MV is designed for immersive, low-impact exploration. Its maiden voyage is now open for bookings.
