HX Expeditions has extended its partnership with Galapagos tour operator Metropolitan Touring, originally a five-year charter, by an additional three years – taking it through to 2029.
The move “reaffirm[s] both organisations shared commitment to responsible, science-led exploration in one of the planet’s most ecologically significant regions,” according to the expedition cruise line.
The extension comes as HX approaches its 130th anniversary in 2026 and continues to expand its presence in the Galápagos. The company has operated carbon-neutral expedition cruises in the archipelago since launching its programme in 2022 onboard Santa Cruz II. The 50-cabin vessel, fully upgraded in 2021, features a locally inspired restaurant, science centre, Discovery Room, sky deck, fitness centre, hot tubs and 36 interconnecting cabins – “more than any other ship in the archipelago and ideal for families,” according to HX.
HX CEO Gebhard Rainer highlighted the significance of the renewed partnership. “As we celebrate 130 years of exploration next year, our ongoing partnership in the Galápagos reflects exactly what HX stands for: connecting guests with the world’s most remarkable environments through responsible, science-focused travel,” he said. “The wildlife, conservation work, and immersive experience our guests can have there are truly like nowhere else on the planet.”
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Galápagos Islands are one of the world’s largest marine reserves, with 97% of the land protected as a national park. HX will continue offering itineraries that begin and end in Quito or Guayaquil, including the Eastern Route: In Darwin’s Footsteps (nine days) and the Northern & Western Route: Nine of the Best Isles (11 days). Two extended programs also pair the itineraries with Machu Picchu for travellers seeking “a dual-destination adventure.”
HX will open bookings for its 2027 and 2028 seasons on 22 December 2025, coinciding with the release of a new standalone Galápagos brochure in January 2026. The launch will be supported by exclusive films featuring HX ambassador Monty Halls, President of the Galapagos Conservation Trust.
Reflecting on a recent visit, Halls said: “I was blown away by the amount of active conservation HX are involved in… Every traveller who journeys with HX contributes directly to its protection – this is tangible, measurable conservation.”
