Hurricane Melissa—the strongest storm of the 2025 season—made landfall in Jamaica as a Category 5 storm Tuesday afternoon, before making landfall overnight in eastern Cuba as a Category 3 storm. Accuweather reports the hurricane had maximum sustained winds of 185 mph and was the first Atlantic storm since Dorian in 2019 to make landfall as a Category 5.

FlightAware shows that nearly all flights into and out of Jamaica’s two major airports—Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay and Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston—continue to be canceled. Visit Jamaica in its “update” Tuesday morning did not share any new information from its previous update on Sunday. The island did, however, activate plans to depart guests from the island before the storm and safeguard those who had to remain on the island.

Despite Hurricane Melissa having passed Jamaica, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) recommends those on the island to remain sheltered due to downed power lines and flooded areas. An analysis by AccuWeather suggested the preliminary damage and economic loss estimate for Jamaica is $22 billion.

In Cuba, the NHC says there is “life-threatening storm surge, flash flooding and landslides.” Similar effects are being felt in Haiti and the Dominican Republic as tropical storm conditions are expected to continue throughout Wednesday morning.

In the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos—where the storm is headed next—the NHC is forecasting “life-threatening storm surge and heavy rainfall.” The Bahamas will see hurricane conditions, while Turks and Caicos will likely feel the effects of tropical storm conditions. Most flights into Turks and Caicos’ Providenciales International Airport have been canceled Tuesday. Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau, Bahamas, has seen only a handful of cancelations and delays today.

Looking to Thursday or Thursday night, it’s possible Bermuda receives hurricane-level rainfall.
