Gurney’s Resorts is expanding to the West Coast with the acquisition of The Beach Retreat and Lodge in South Lake Tahoe. The property will undergo a multi-year renovation before debuting as Gurney’s Lake Tahoe Resort & Spa in spring 2027. 

Lake Tahoe, said Michael Nenner, president of Gurney’s Resorts, represents a “blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunity,” adding that the destination “is a perfect complement to our flagship Montauk (New York) property.”

The transition and extensive capital improvements will immediately begin at the South Lake Tahoe waterfront location. Upon opening, Gurney’s Lake Tahoe Resort & Spa will have 206 guestrooms and suites, as well as new food and beverage concepts, a spa, refreshed banquet and event spaces, and private beach and marina access. The hotel will also lean into its setting, emphasizing outdoor experiences available year-round—from lakeside recreation in the summer to easy access to world-class ski access in the winter.

Gurney’s Lake Tahoe will serve as a sister property to the flagship Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa on Long Island, New York’s east end. The year-round Hamptons resort is known for its private beach, new signature restaurant (gigi’s montauk) and its Seawater Spa—touted as the only ocean-fed seawater spa in North America.

The company used to operate two additional resorts on the East Coast—Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina (now the Newport Harbor Island Resort) and Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina (previously and once again the Montauk Yacht Club). In 2022, the brand made its first foray outside of the East Coast with Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, which it acquired the year prior. It operated the property as Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, a Gurney’s Resort & Spa, but it is no longer a Gurney’s resort.
