More details have been revealed about the 18-month renovation of Belmond‘s Villa San Michele, which will reopen on 28 April 2026, ushering in a new era for the Florentine icon.

The transformation will feature 39 redesigned suites and rooms, the property’s first-ever spa, and a commitment to “slow luxury year-round.”

“For us, hospitality is deeply intertwined with cultural immersion,” said General Manager Sofia Peluso. “Guests can embark on a journey that weaves together food, art, history, architecture and nature – a true fusion of body, mind and soul and a modern-day echo of the Renaissance principles that have so shaped our history.”

Originally a Franciscan monastery dating back 600 years, the Villa’s architecture remains a testament to the Italian Renaissance, famed for its Michelangelo-inspired façade, arched terrace, and terraced gardens.

The meticulous restoration, led by Luigi Fragola Architects in collaboration with Belmond’s design team, draws inspiration from Tuscan artistry while “renewing and projecting [the Villa’s history] into the restless dynamism of Florence,” according to Designer Luigi Fragola.

Each of the 27 suites and 12 rooms will be reimagined using authentic materials including Tuscan textiles, artisanal ceramics, marble, terracotta and wood. Three new signature suites – Limonaia, The Grand Tour, and Botanica – will showcase the property’s layered heritage, from Napoleon’s former residence to spaces inspired by the Villa’s lush gardens.

The unveiling of the Villa San Michele Spa by Guerlain will mark a defining moment in the hotel’s evolution, featuring a “Secret Garden” entrance, hand-painted by artist Elena Carozzi, and exclusive Guerlain rituals.

Meanwhile, the 9,700 square metre gardens, revived by Luca Ghezzi Garden Design, will bloom with citrus, roses and irises — symbols of Florence’s Golden Age.

A collaboration with La DoubleJ introduces wellness experiences led by founder JJ Martin, complementing chef Alessandro Cozzolino’s new gastronomic journey through Tuscan flavours.
