Aurora Expeditions has taken delivery of its newest ship, Douglas Mawson, at China Merchants Heavy Industry in Haimen, China.

The ship represents the seventh and final vessel in SunStone Maritime Group‘s Infinity Class series.

“We are very pleased with the performance of our Infinity Class, and we are proud to have now delivered seven of these beautiful vessels to the expedition market,” said Carsten Lund, CEO of SunStone.

Douglas Mawson joins the Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle to become the third Infinity Class vessel operated by Aurora Expeditions. The ship is named after Sir Douglas Mawson, the renowned Australian geologist and Antarctic explorer, whose contributions were pivotal in advancing the study of the polar regions.

A result of a truly international collaboration, the vessel was designed by Norwegian naval architects Ulstein, with interiors created by Swedish-American firm Tomas Tillberg Design USA, outfitted by Finnish interior contractors Makinen, and constructed at the Chinese shipyard CMHI.

Douglas Mawson measures 104.40 meters in length and 18.40 meters in width, with a draft of 5.30 meters. It accommodates up to 170 passengers and 102 crew members. Built to handle both polar and tropical environments, the ship boasts Ice Class 1A and Polar Class 6 certifications.

Technologically advanced, the vessel features Ulstein’s signature X-Bow for smoother sailing in rough seas, along with Safe Return to Port, virtual anchoring, and zero speed stabilizers to enhance passenger safety and experience. Onboard amenities include a swimming pool, bar and restaurants, lounges, boutique, gym, spa, and sauna.
